24oct10:00 am11:11 amOfficer keepsafeWe plan on following on from child protection week into children\\'s week by inviting an officer from the Police force to interact with the children and discuss what it means to be safe. Letting the children see and touch some of the non-threatening equipment (like a badge, hat, or flashlight) can make the officer seem more real and less intimidating. A brief, supervised look inside a police car can be exciting and demystify the vehicle, showing it as a tool for safety rather than something to fear. This will also create positive connections within the community. We plan on involving the children in the planning; questions they like to ask the police officer and how they would like to celebrate feeling safe. Families will also be invited to the event. Resources needed: Reading books that depict police officers in a positive light which can prepare the child for the meeting and reinforce the idea that officers are helpers. Purchasing police dress ups and engaging in role-playing games where the child pretends to be a police officer can also help internalize the concept of officers as protectors.
